Sweet Saturday Samples

Welcome to another edition of Sweet Saturday Samples! It's been a while since I presented anything from "The Chosen," so today I'm going to present you with a passage from my first book. This is the scene where The Chosen leaves for its very first quest together.

Several hours after leaving the castle to set off on their quest, The Chosen rode through the lands of Phantasma on their way to Prince Gastle’s kingdom.  They knew it would take them several days to get there, and that they would pass through most of Phantasma on their way.

As they rode over the high bridge that connected the Castle of the Elves with the small town of Loch Moss, they were stopped by one of its guards.  “Who wishes to cross into the Loch today?” she asked.

Striker was at the front of the group, and responded.  “I am Striker of the Elves, head of The Chosen.  We are passing through on our way to Prince Gastle’s kingdom on a mission from Queen Laurali of the Castle of the Elves.  Will you allow us to pass, please?”

“In order to cross through our land, you must first complete two tasks.  You must go into the Loch and destroy ten of its sea creatures.  These creatures have been causing havoc on our lands by destroying our crops.  Once you have killed the creatures, you will retrieve the vines that grow on their limbs, which we use for fertilizer.  Bring me twenty vines, and I will allow you to pass.”

“We will be happy to complete these tasks for you,” Striker replied.

The guard let them cross the bridge and escorted them to the entrance of the Loch.  It was a large pit of green slime, so thick that you couldn’t see anything through it.  Halli thought it looked like the pea soup her father loved to eat.  Striker led the rest of the group to the entrance of the Loch.

“I think we should dismount and leave our horses here,” Striker said.  “We can tie their reigns to the tree branches, and come back for them after we’ve killed the creatures and collected the vines.”  Everyone nodded in agreement.  They stopped their horses, dismounted and tied the reins to the trees.  There was plenty of grass around for the horses to eat while their riders went searching through the Loch.

The rest of the group followed Striker through the shallow part of the Loch, and began searching for the creatures.  It wasn’t long before they saw them walking through the thick substance in the distance.

“Everyone stay close,” Striker ordered.  “We don’t want to lose each other in the Loch.”

They quietly began walking towards the creatures.  When they were close enough, Striker and Kaidyla began shooting their bows at one of the creatures, being careful not to disturb the others.  The creature felt the arrows hit it, and looked around to see where they came from.  When he saw the group, he ran towards them growling.  This alerted two of the other creatures that were near it.  The three of them charged towards the group, and everyone jumped into action.

Striker and Kaidyla continued to shoot arrows at the creatures, as their pets ran over to attack them.  Silvor, Red and Lumina began using their magic to attack the creatures.  Fireballs, frostbolts and bright sparks began to fly through the air and hit the creatures.  When they got close enough, the creatures began returning the attack, causing Striker and Kaidyla to fight one-on-one using their swords.

Halli knew this is what she had been training for all week.  As the creatures attacked her friends, she began conjuring her healing spells as fast as she could.  At first, she threw each of them a quick small heal, going from one to the other.  Then she noticed that Kaidyla and Striker were receiving most of the damage, and started to throw them her bigger healing spell.  She worked as fast as she could as far from the creatures as she could, so they wouldn’t notice her.  She kept an eye on everyone and healed them as often as they needed it.

  1. I like your idea of Halli participating in the battle by healing the warriors. That skill is as valuable as swordplay! I'm looking forward to seeing how they defeat these creatures and take their vines. That can't be an easy task!
